The Joy of Writing

What makes writing a joy? Sometimes I am not sure, reading the same sentence time and time again trying to get it just right. I wrote a series of articles some time ago about why we write, I thought back and decided to sort of revisit.

Writing is a joy or should be. Well, some writing is a joy. Of course some writing has to deliver bad or sad news. Is that writing? To me it is, writing anything is writing. Sounds daft but it’s true.

What writing am I talking about. (Writing about actually). May joy is in exploring poetry, short stories and attempting to write novels. As many of you know, I hope, I wrote and published a book called Zen and The Art of Timetabling. It was a semi-factual book of sorts. I was really pleased and very proud of myself for achieving it.

Is that the end? No. Very simple word in the grand scheme of things but really it’s a 50/50 split. If I had said yes it was the end then why write this? No does not mean I have to write another book. Writing blogs is writing after all. These are a joy in themselves, film reviews, photography updates and all the above.

No also encompasses the book I am trying to write. Now this is both a joy and not a joy. Why not a joy? Because once you start creating a world, you can’t stop or should not stop. Although you create the world, at least the outer limits, the world then creates more for you to discover. That includes characters.

Here lies the rub as they say. You introduce your character and they say hello. Then you watch them for clues as to how they act, react and more. It sounds odd but it’s true believe me. In the current sci-fi book I am writing, my characters are showing me what they can be like. So does the story.

It is a joy in many ways. Just writing is fun, creating new works, getting praise from people and just knowing that you can write is a joy. Writing this is a joy, it’s a form of self-expression that can be done.

So what next? Well I will finish my book, my second one and then look to publish it. Self publishing will be the way for me again unless someone really wants it. The joy of writing is just that, a joy.
