Lockdown

Lockdown

By Mark O'Donnell

We face an unseen enemy,
It’s victims spread far and wide.
The world seen through pains of glass,
For us to reach outside,
Our spirits now locked down.

We find ourselves stranded,
In new worlds of our own.
All covered by three simple rules
To emerge safe and not alone,
Our worlds now locked down.

This is no game, we can’t reset,
Rules so clear, all now set.
Wash your hands, isolate as you can,
Stay safe inside, is the only plan,
Our people now locked down.

Family and friends try to appear,
Through portals we cannot pass.
Separated, not together,
Some touches will be lost forever,
Our memories now locked down.

Heroes stand, Heroes fall,
Their courage and heart standing tall.
Without their costly sacrifice
We all would pay a dark price,
Our losses now locked down.

A moment in history, cast,
Unlike others in its past.
Sadness, loss and tears of pain,
Mixed relief with joy yet stained,
Our darkness now locked down.

Yet in the dark we find a hope,
From people all around us.
Spirits shine as beacons of light,
From the oldest to the new,
Not all hope now locked down.

Life will change, for the better some claim,
To some, never again.
Everyone together in one world,
Lockdown to save the day,
Our past is now locked down.

When all is done and past is past,
Take a moment to honour those we asked.
Remember them, as one once said,
Our future is built on what they left,
We will be free from this locked down.
