Captain Marvel – Thoughts

It has been a few weeks since I watched this latest movie in the Marvel universe. It has taken me sometime to write my thoughts on this one, given the run up to what many feel is the conclusion of this part of its universe.

Although it was stand-alone, hints were given in other movies as to this character and their appearance. If you look back at the comics, Captain Marvel starts out as a true Kree sent to observe the planet Earth. He was a He. Now due to various real issues, another comic complained, Marvel under went some changes.

It was not until the 2012 in the comics that Ms Marvel took on the role of Captain Marvel. To a degree, I guess you could say this character, being alien, is a parasite who moves from body to body continuing their fight or struggle. To be fair, you could end up wondering who else might be Captain Marvel given the way this character was used in other stories.

I do wonder if this was clearly advanced planning on Marvel’s part to introduce Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel back in 2012, knowing full-well they would need her as part of the Endgame. It is clear they have a mapped out plan and it is working.

Having read a number of the comics, my only issue was perhaps not giving some nod or notice to the way this character was formed. The cinema story was good, well-balanced but I would have liked that ‘Shazam’ moment. Now of course Marvel could not do that – in particular the word – however, they could have used the Nega Bands to ‘create’ Captain Marvel.

One of the beauties of the comic book world is that characters can change and in some cases there is a need to change. A few times ones have died and then come back through time travel a well worn story tool.

So what of this movie? Well in terms of cinematography it was excellent, how could it not be these days. Humour was there, but played a lesser role than some movies. It had a purpose, an underlying theme and message. Never give up and believe in yourself was what I saw. Was there a ‘wow’ factor? That is where I am stuck. It did, but I guess because I know what’s coming the ‘Wow’ factor was almost holding its own breath.

Like many other Marvel characters, Captain Marvel has many stories to tell both alone and with others. It is the next step in this growing and for now, unstoppable universe.

Tagline: ‘Don’t say that word!
