52 Week Photography Challenge

Week 1 and 2

I don’t often enter into these challenges without good reason. The last one was pick 10 films that had a certain meaning to me. That was very difficult, given the subject matter and the 90 or so other films I had to reject.

This one interests me in a number of ways. Firstly, it is on a subject I am enjoying again. Photography has become both rewarding, therapeutic and making me challenge myself. It is not difficult to do nor is it bad for your health. I do have to sit and edit having taken way too many pictures at times, but it makes me get out. It makes me think of what I am photographing rather than just snapping.

Secondly, it’s a challenge that lasts a year. It will give me a reason to take a photograph. Not that I need that reason mind you, but it helps.

Thirdly, it will be fun. That in itself, is important. If it was not fun, why do it?

So the first two weeks have passed (I might have been a bit slow to start with) and I have posted two straight forward photos.

Week One

Me. Now there was my first challenge. Did I really want a photography of me? There is no guidance with this, so you have I suspect, freedom to pick what each topic means. Was me, my surrounding, my camera, my studio (I don’t have one) or was it me.

I decided to pick me, myself and a selfie. But I changed it a little. I decided to create a negative of myself as you might see in the days of film. The first photograph I guess sets something of a tone.  How detailed will I be?

The other element of this, for me, is what am I trying to achieve from this challenge? Part of this is to increase my knowledge, my understanding and produce images that continue to improve. Week one, sorted.

Week Two

Time. A classic photograph indeed and one that drew me to produce photographs for sale or attempt to sell. How to show time? There is of course the passage of time, say a plant growing over a period or a raindrop running down a window pane. The latter is one to try. I could have shown the night sky and the passage of the stars however, I wish to consider that elsewhere. My choice. an old pocket watch. There is something quite magical maybe adventurous in owning a pocket watch. Not just any pocket watch at that but one that appears to have itself travelled in time. That, for me, was what time meant. It was not digital, but mechanical. It had a history, some what unknown.

Time

This will be an interesting challenge and in many ways a project. I will continue to write as the weeks progress.
