Hello Dear Reader
My first blog in a couple of weeks and why is that? Well, it’s a busy time, summer is here, archery and well writers block. Hence the pun in the title. A few things have been going on in life, some have not turned out as expected or wanted. Still, they may well turn out right in the end.
So what is writers block? Well, for me its a few things. No idea what to write next, lack of writing energy in the story or too busy. The first one comes when the planning falls to bits. I was told to make a proper plan or outline for my story. This I have tried to do. It has not worked as well as I thought. I suppose I should make some plan. I know the general idea of what my hero is doing and the detail is created as you write. Its that in-between bit, the one part that gives you possible paths to take. It also acts as a reminder why you are writing the story and the major plot points along the way. So I need to rework my outline.
What could cause a lack of energy in your own story? Maybe you have become disinterested in your own story? Maybe disinterested is too far. Don’t forget you are creating a whole new world. Its not a simple thing to do. You may have a background to use, for example London in the 1850’s, but you still have to explore the place and open the readers eyes. If you invent a new world, you have to build everything from the ground up. It may not seem that complex or such a big deal, but try describing a simple spaceport with all that is needed for a spaceship. Not so easy as you may think. Not if you want to make the scene come alive.
Too busy. Since I am not a professional writer (is that a real thing?) I have other things like work and hobbies like archery. Moving house has really taken a huge amount of time recently. Busy tends to mean priorities. Spending an hour doing writing rather than playing a game. Each hour adds up. But, could busy mean something? Scared of finishing? Worried about your writing style or ability? It might be a self-defense to stop you finishing and thus opening yourself to the one thing you really fear. Other people reading your work. You know what you mean when you write about the ship because you can visualise it. Others can’t and that’s where the problem comes. They can’t see what you don’t write.
So what is my writers block? A combination of things. Busy with moving house, work and other things. I do need to sort out my plot as well, that is something that needs working on. Yet I found time to unblock myself with this blog. I wonder how many others do the same trick. Write something thats different.
So that ends this little blog. It’s not much as they go, maybe discussion point for some writers, maybe a help. I don’t know. All I do know is my writers block seems to have gone.
Tagline: Writers Blog (it’s a trap!) Darn another pun.
